BYUI Snow Performance Arts Center – Costume Storage

Centralized, Onsite Costume Storage at the Snow Center for the Performing Arts Helps Preserve Inventory

The Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts at Brigham Young University Idaho, Rexburg, Idaho is the home for all types of performances from musical events to stage productions. Used 24 hours of the day, seven days a week, there are a lot of items needed for this space such as costumes and props. Prior to Spacesaver Intermountain’s involvement in the organization of the Snow Center, all these items were located throughout the building, offsite storage facilities and others. It was extremely challenging for each department to organize.

“There were items located all over campus, underneath an old stage, and offsite. Some items were located in the basement putting them at risk for water damage,” says Rob Lundquist, president, Spacesaver Intermountain, Salt Lake City. Organizing onsite costume storage plus preservation were important factors in getting Spacesaver involved in creating a successful organizational structure.

Spacesaver was given a list of inventory and how much costume storage BYUI thought it would need to store. The team also looked at where the current costume storage was to get a better idea of storage needs. “Their goal was to centralize, better control and protection of inventory, as well as enhance visibility to inventory,” Lundquist adds.

Powered 35 1⁄2 ft. long carriages with cantilever‐style shelving were the perfect solution for hanging clothing storage. A powered system was chosen because of the size of the carriages and for the state‐of‐the‐art technology it offered the performance center. Spacesaver’s superior Roller Guidance Systems was also installed.

Half and full hanging clothing storage was included to allow for complete use of the space. BYUI provided the information on how much space it would need for half and full hanging options. “We used the ceiling height to our advantage and put shelves in those spaces to store props,” Lundquist says. “We wanted to maximize the space as best we could.” In addition, a custom built shelf was added to the bottom of the system to better store additional miscellaneous items.

“Previously, every time someone would need a fitting, they would have to meet wherever that costume was located,” Lundquist says. “Now, they are more efficient and can schedule all the fittings in one place.”
